Zulu warband

28mm plastic Zulu warband

My next tribal African warband is finished. An Zulu tribe.

The miniatures are Warlord Games Unmarried warriors.

At first the box seemed a little dull with only four bodies but with the different head and arm options and all the ceremonial extra gear you can really ad a whole lot of variety. A great box.
In the pictures you can see a chieftain and 3 small units of Zulu warriors.

One of units will act as skirmishes equipped with different spears, one unit is equipped with more close combat weapons dressed in full regalia and the last one is a mixed unit with some longer spears and some regalia of ostrich feathers and leopard skins.

Now I can start play test the balance of my two African tribes with painted models and their hopefully different battle tactics with the Hail Caesars rules.

But damn its hard to get good pictures with such a bright background and dark miniatures. The miniatures look all flat and boring.

Review - Warlord Games Unmarried Zulu

Review - Warlord Games Unmarried Zulu
http://store.warlordgames.com/unmarried-zulu-regiment-plastic-boxed-set-7557-p.asp

As a neighboring tribe to my Perry plastic Africans I got a box of Warlord Games Unmarried Zulus.

The box contains 32 plastic warriors on frames, a metal chief and a small paper on some history and famous units. I like that small history lection included, it feels like that’s the little extra in the box.

The warrior frames are four men per frame and at first I thought this could be repetitive but as it also includes lots of weapon options and 8 different head I didn´t feel like that at all.
Even thou I will skip gunpowder weapon in my African project I still got plenty of weapon arms to choose from.

A Zulu warrior in full regalia is just beautiful.
I just love this wonderfull age of plastics.

Rules for Zulus can be find here.

181a: Proto-Zulu (or Zulu) (500 AD to 1908 AD)
8 x 4Wb (main army), 2 x 3Bw or 4Wb*, 2 x 4Aux or 2Ps or 4Wb (allied tribes)

* Missile armed (if Zulu would be rifles), some made or had good enough bows to be used in this way.
This army represents those groups that became organized or were warlike enough to be well organized. They seem to have been able to overwhelm their opponents with tactics, fighting skill and numbers brought to the field of battle. The Zulu seem to have been the last major group but not the first. They were unique with the change in shield and spear, but not in ability to organize or field an army. They were also unique in doing away with missile troops until they started getting guns in trade or as loot, which they were quick to adopt for themselves.

That’s a lot of warbands for me with unfortunately little variations as I felt Bw-troops would be wrong, but it’s a beautiful army to look at.
Now I need to persuade a friend to also get some Africans and the tribalwar is on…
